＜Our Comcept ＞
現代の「工芸」と「美術」は、しばしば別々のものとして語られます。たとえば、工芸＝土や木、金属、布などの素材を生かし、手で形づくる器や道具。使うことを前提とした“暮らしの中の美”。一方で美術＝視覚や感性に訴えかける絵画や彫刻、舞台芸術など、表現のための“見るためのもの”。そんなふうに整理されがちです。
しかし、本来この二つの境界線はもっと曖昧で、ゆるやかに溶け合うものでした。そもそも「美術工芸」という言葉が登場したのは明治以降のことで、それまでは、つくることも、つかうことも、表現することも、ひとつながりの行為だったのです。
今、再びその垣根は取り払われつつあります。たとえば、丹念な手仕事から生まれる一片のかたちに、アートピースのような緊張感が宿るとき。あるいは、強いコンセプトと素材感が共鳴し、使うことで完成するオブジェのような作品が生まれるとき。ジャンルに回収されない、自由で確かな「もの」が、あちこちで立ち上がっています。
DOUBLE KOBEは、いまこの時代に息づく「ものづくり」に静かに光を当てる場です。
石造りの洋館が建ち並び、時間の層が折り重なる港町・神戸。
この歴史あるまちを舞台に、日本の民藝や伝統を継ぐつくり手、海外の作家やアーティストとともに、クラフトの枠を超えた表現に出会う時間をひらいていきたいと考えています。
確かな技術に裏打ちされた作品。
そして、手法やジャンルにとらわれず、自らの言葉で素材と向き合い、今という時代と静かに対話しながら、ものづくりを続けている方々と、ともにこの場をつくれたらと思っています。
「クラフトフェア」という枠組みを借りつつも、その内側だけにとどまることなく、作品と空間が響き合う展示や、思考やプロセスを交わす対話、地域との関係性を見つめ直す構成を大切にしています。
多くの人で賑わう華やかさはないかもしれませんが、心に静かに残るような時間を、今年もひとつひとつ丁寧にかたちにしていきます。
神戸という街で、新たな出会いが生まれることを心から楽しみにしています。

DOUBLE KOBE 2025
In modern times, “craft” and “art” are often discussed as separate realms. For example, craft is seen as objects such as vessels or tools made by hand, using materials like clay, wood, metal, or fabric̶beauty embedded in daily life and utility. Meanwhile, art is considered something to be looked at̶paintings, sculptures, and performing arts that appeal to our visual senses and emotions. These categories tend to be neatly divided. However, the boundary between the two was originally much more fluid. The term “fine arts and crafts” (“bijutsu kogei”) only appeared after the Meiji era. Before that, making, using, and expressing were all part of a seamless act.
Today, those boundaries are beginning to dissolve again. For instance, a meticulously handcrafted form may carry the tension of a contemporary art piece. Or, when a strong concept and the texture of materials resonate, an object that finds completion through use may emerge. We are witnessing the rise of free and confident “things” that defy categorization.
DOUBLE KOBE focuses on this evolving form of creation. In Kobe, a port town where stone-built Western-style houses line the streets and layers of time intersect, we hope to create a space where we encounter expressions that transcend the traditional frameworks of craft. Alongside Japanese artisans who carry on the traditions of Mingei and international artists, we aim to depict new landscapes where contemporary sensibilities overlap with the memory of the hand.
